Video skips when I shut laptop?

Videos play fine while it's on, then I shut my laptop and it goes into sleep mode. When I open it back up and click play on a fully loaded video, the video picture skips frantically as if replaying a millisecond over and over again, but the audio is fine. On my old laptop, I could shut and open and play a video that was already loaded just fine, as if I'd never shut the lid. Then I got a new one and downloaded an update. Now it does this. Does anyone know of a patch or something that I can download to fix? It's not too much of a bother to just refresh the video and click on the time where I was and watch from there, but it is tedious. Insight would be helpful.
