Can you change your class between mass effect 1 and 2?

Are you able to, and still carry over the current storyline? i'm replaying the game and im a vanguard at but wanted to be the tech biotic person, so can i change it without messing up my desicions from the first game? also what will happen with mass effect 3 because they'll allow all classes to use all weapons? cheers
